Disability is a state of mind

July 21, 2017

Disability is not half amputated arms and legs covered with bandages; it is the half-hearted will power covered with disbelief. It is not a ‘bodily defect’ but loss of hope and love for life. And it is certainly not the stunted growth of limbs, but stunted mindset. Disability is a state of mind. It all depends on what goes on in the mind of the person who faces it and how he perceives it.

Channelizing their strength and energy in the right direction, differently abled people have been achieving feats that are astonishing enough to mock the lives of the normal ones. Such miraculous souls don’t let a ‘Dis’ to come in front of their ‘ability’. People like Sai Prasad Vishwanathan, Django Reinhardt and Divyanshu Ganatra are an inspiration to other differently abled ones and a proof to all of us that they are in no way, less able.

Numbness of the legs did not numb his fiery temperament. Born as a person who could not take a step without his crutches, Sai Prasad Vishwanathan, with his optimistic approach and will power, became the first disabled Asian to set foot on Antarctica, proving to the world that disability is not equivalent to inability. Django Reinhardt achieved an astonishing feat of bringing into existence the groundbreaking style of “hot” jazz guitar. The element of astonishment lies in the fact that his two fingers of the left hand and his right leg were paralysed due to fire. His grit and inclination towards music did not let his disability come in the way of his exceptional achievement. Being visually challenged did not limit Divyanshu Ganatra’s passions. His heartbeat pumped enough courage to overcome all the challenges and feel the unseen sailing across the sky for nearly 2 minutes as a solo paraglider, earning the name of The Blind Adventurer.

The life stories of all these people with unparalleled conviction make a bona fide revelation that we, as a society, are a victim of disabled mindset. There is no greater disability than overlooking someone’s special needs and acknowledging his potential. People fail to look beyond the incapacity of the differently abled.

Disability is like a mirage for most of the people. A closer look at it reveals that there are many more aspects to the personality of the differently abled other than their disability. The need of the hour is to “Swachh” our minds and look at them with the same eyes.We are now at the crossroads and need to decide a direction to move towards. One in which we resonate with them and another, treading on which makes our society crippled. God created us all equal and while passing through the prism of life, we got split into different colors. Let us appreciate the beauty of all those colors and live in acceptance with the will of God.
